Colder weather + allergies = headaches!!
I don't know about you, but when this wacky Missouri weather starts to turn, my allergies do not respond well. Warm afternoons sandwiched between cold mornings and nights leave my head in a fog and often with a lingering headache.
Try some of these tips that I found help relieve my tension, stress and allergy headaches before reaching for the asprin bottle:
-Find if your headaches have a trigger (food, stress, certain smells or lighting etc.)
-Use peppermint pure essential oil on your temples and wrists (straight out of the bottle, or mix it with lotion or another carrier oil)
-Find the pressure point on the webbing between your first finger and thumb and squeeze the tar out of it!
-Lots of water, save the caffeine for later if none of the above methods are working
-Go take a nap
-Use your fingertips to gently strum the tendons in your neck at the base of your head
-Go get a massage! :)
Massage has a history of helping to relieve headaches - keep in mind though, massage is much more helpful on muscle, stress, and tension headaches than on vascular headaches. There are still benefits, but mixed therapies (adding aromatherapy to the massage, heat or cold packs etc.) are much more likely to achieve the desired relief.
Feel free to post, e-mail or call me with questions or comments.
Until next time,
Kristin

Massage Therapy's Perks
Many people think of massage only as a luxury, but it has many more benefits than just helping you feeling good. It lowers blood pressure, decreases cortisol levels (stress hormone), stretches and releases sore, tight and atrophied muscles, jump starts the immune and lymph system, improves circulation, and helps ease aches and pains. There is also research connected with an improved body image among women who receive massage. Check out this article in Associated Massage and Bodywork Professionals Magazine.
Let me know what you think.

Essential oils...more than just smelling good.
Essential oils have so many more uses than just simply smelling good. Lavender and Peppermint are great examples. Lavender is known for its ability to help calm the senses and relieve stress. Peppermint is a natural pain reliever and also helps with nausea/upset stomachs. Check out some of the ways you can daily use lavender and peppermint oils.
NOTE: some things to keep in mind when using essential oils:
-always make sure you are using a 100% natural, pure essential oil, not just any oil with aroma
-if you have sensitive skin, mix a drop or two of essential oil in a carrier oil, like olive oil
-when using essential oils, use glass containers, never plastic. The oils can deteriorate the plastic quickly
-essential oils are very concentrated, so always remember, less is more!
Cool Off With Peppermint Spray
Take a 4oz. spray bottle and fill it with pure water, then add 2 drops of Peppermint essential oil (make sure it is a pure essential oil, not just a smell good oil) Give the back of your neck and your back, legs and feet a spritz every so often. Or add a drop Peppermint essential oil to a bowl half filled with water. Dunk a wash cloth in it, wring it out, then dab the wash cloth on the back of your neck, your legs, and the bottoms of your feet.
Refreshing Peppermint Flavored Water
Take a cool glass of pure water and add peppermint or lemon oil to a glass of water. Peppermint oil or leaves are also great added into your ice cubes. Remember, a little goes a long way!
Smell Good on the Go
Put a few drops of oil on a cotton ball or tissue and place it in your car's vent. Peppermint will cool and refresh, and lavender will help sooth and de-stress. You can also put a drop or two on a washcloth and place in your closet or dresser to infuse the scent in your clothing.
Stop Bugs in Their Tracks
Peppermint oil and lavender both are great at running off insects. Put some oil on a cotton ball and place it in the path of ants or unwanted bugs, or by a window to help keep away or kill the flying variety of pest.
*Peppermint oil is also great at relieving itch...try it on your next mosquito bite.
*Lavender oil is great on sunburn and will help heal and relieve the pain
